The 2 Years Old Challenge

Young 2 year olds are the HARDEST to photograph. That's not true, they can be or they can also be the most fun and rewarding.

Things I attempted in this session to help adorable Colin smile, being so close to his bedtime, are:

Games! We played Ring Around the Rosie, Run to Mom and Dad, peek a boo from behind my camera and lots of tickles.

Noises! We sang Baby Shark and I also always make a fool of myself because I make obnoxious sounds as loud as I can. Anything for the smiles!

Candy! I prefer that only I have the treat or candy, or that mom lets me hold it ransom. This is kind of like training the toddler to seek rewards by obeying me, rather than mom or dad. For candy, I use PEZ candies or Smarties, bc they don't melt, they don't take forever to chew and dissolve fairly quickly. Alternatives could be dissolvable yogurt drops, cheerios, or anything with a quick swallow and no mess!

Something that I remind parents and can be extremely difficult, is less is more. It can be frustrating to capture smiles from young children, but what can be more frustrating is that when you finally do, one of the parents is not looking or making a funny face. Don't get me wrong, I always appreciate help, but I will ask you to stand directly behind me or do a slight squeeze on the thigh to make them giggle.

Pictured above, I had the siblings face each other, and encouraged them to snuggle and give kisses to one another. This creates a genuine moment that every one can enjoy and treasure.
